Laser District 8 News 2006

Revised February 11, 2007

Final Results - The 2006 East End Laser Series concluded this past weekend with racing in Sag Harbor hosted by Breakwater YC. The series consisted of 3 regattas at 3 clubs on 3 consecutive Saturday afternoons in August – Shelter Island YC August 5, Devon YC August 12, Breakwater YC August 19. In August the wind on the East End is generally better than anywhere on Long Island and while there was one light day it was followed by two weekends of good wind.

In total 29 competitors participated in 3 regattas and completed 13 races. 11 racers came to two or more regattas and qualified for series standings. 5 racers participated in all three events and were allowed to throw out their worst finish. Doug Mercer was third overall having won the first regatta in Shelter Island. Andre van Ryn Bach was second with two strong showings and Rudy Ratsep was first with two regatta wins (full results below). Prizes generously provided by series sponsor Sailaction were awarded the top three finishers.

Many thanks go to our club hosts – SIYC, DYC and BYC.

Race ReportThe second of three regattas in the East End Laser Series was raced Saturday, August 12th at Devon YC in Amagansett. A 17 boat fleet completed 6 races in 8 to 12 knots of breeze out of the NW under blue skies and bright sunshine on Gardiners Bay. Verrrry nice! Rudy Ratsep took the day with 3 firsts, a third and a fourth (results below). Many thanks go to Kevin Fallon, Doug Mercer and everyone at DYC for hosting District 8 again this year in such a beautiful setting with great hospitality. Thank you also to Devon YC race management who did a terrific job in shifty conditions.

22 competitors in total have raced in the East End Laser Series first two regattas. Andre van Ryn Bach leads the series with one regatta remaining (standings below). The series will certainly be decided next weekend! All ages, abilities and rigs welcome!

Saturday, August 19, 1 PM - Breakwater YC, Sag Harbor

Race ReportThe first regatta of East End Laser Series was Saturday, August 5th at Shelter Island YC. A 13 boat fleet completed only one race in a dying northerly and a mercifully light current in Pipes Cove. Doug Mercer exercised considerable patience and wisdom to take the day. Complete results below. The race committee of Chris Sterling, Chris Gallaso, Allie Gallaso did a great job. Many thanks go to SIYC for joining Laser District 8 as a new host this year and for welcoming us to such an idyllic setting.

Two more regattas remain of the East End Laser Series. All ages, abilities and rigs welcome!

Saturday, August 12, 1 PM - Devon YC, Amagansett

Saturday, August 19, 1 PM - Breakwater YC, Sag Harbor

See you Saturday - Devon YC always hosts a good regatta with consistent winds, flat water and a gracious host - appetizers and an open bar will follow racing.

Race Report – District 8 Grand Prix and O' Day Area B's, Bay Shore YC, July 8-9 2006

Report courtesy of the good folks at BSYC.

BSYC played host for the combined Area B O’Day / Laser District 8 Grand Prix Regatta last weekend (July 8, 9).

We sailed in light airs (5-8 knots) on Saturday, and completed three races before the last race starting time limit.  The racing included 20 Laser Full Rig and 10 Laser Radials.

At the end of day one’s racing, the Full Rig Laser fleet was led by Tedd Himler of Manhasset Bay YC safely in first place with a 2-1-1 series.  Right behind him, tied for second with 9 points were Alistar Duke, and Thomas Conlin.  The Laser Radial fleet was led by Edwardo Cordero of Sayville with a 1-1-1 series, followed by Catherine Chimney (Seawanhaka YC) and Michael Byrnes (Sayville) with10 and 12 points respectively.

Sunday’s racing began in freshening westerly breezes.  Three windward-leeward races were sailed before the breeze had built to 12-14 knots when the fleet spokesperson (Lindsay Hewitt) approached the RC boat to request a triangle course.  Following a brief postponement to reconfigure the course, the racing resumed with some nice planing legs enjoyed by all.

A late lunch was served while the boats were being made ready for the trip home and the RC sorted out the score sheets.

See the attached scoring spread-sheet for the full results.

In addition, the Laser Fleet special awards were made to:

Race Report – Dinghy Shop, Amityville, June 3, 2006 - An uncharacteristically light air day for the South Shore. 3 boats showed up, got in some informal racing practice, but no official results.

Race Report – Seawanhaka Corinthian YC, May 27, 2006 – Skunked! 8 Lasers showed up, but not enough breeze to race. The committee gave us a couple of practice starts, so at least we had a little time on the water.  Hopefully we’ll have better luck next time…

Race Report – Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club, May 20, 2006 – Nice early season blustery weather. Seven sailors were treated to shifty 14-15 knot winds with 20 knot gusts. Some spectacular wipeouts (including yours truly burying his mast 2 feet into the mud in front of the club.) Lindsay’s not on the score table because he was our intrepid race committee, and gave us six races on varying courses. A great start to the new season, let’s get some more boats out there.

Place Name Score
1 Don Woodworth 8 1/4
2 Jean Yves-Fillian 8 1/2
3 Fred Ables 8 3/4
4 Bob Terry 22
5 James Wittpenn 26
6 Rob Martinez 26
7 Ed Chimney 29

Tuesday night racing at CSHBC – Our posted May 3rd start date was left over from last year, but Lindsay says he’ll be out there if anybody wants to get an early start. The weather is still a bit cool (balmy by frostbite standards) but Lindsay reports fine wet suit weather.

News, events, interesting happenings?  New boat, career change, new baby?  Let me know and we’ll share it on the site!  This site is more than just race reports – it’s a great way for all of the good folks in District 8 to keep in touch.  Just e-mail me your info for posting.
